Pediatric Fundamental Critical Care Support (PFCCS), a course for those interested in learning how to recognize critical illness and initiate care for the critically ill pediatric patient, will be offered Friday, May 10, in the Learning Resources Center.

The course is an educational tool for those entering the field of pediatric emergency medicine, pediatric crtical care and disaster response medicine.

Course Purpose

  • To prepare physicians, physician-assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, respiratory therapists, transport teams, and EMT/paramedics for the first 24 hours of pediatric critical care until transferred or appropriate critical care consultation is obtained.
  • To prepare non-intensivists to manage the acute deterioration of critically ill pediatrics patients.
  • To prepare pediatric, emergency medicine and surgical house staff for Pediatric critical care medicine.

At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Prioritize assessment needs for the critically ill or injured infant and child.
  • Select appropriate diagnostic tests.
  • Respond to significant changes in the unstable pediatric patient.
  • Recognize and initiate management of acute life-threatening conditions.
  • Determine the need for expert consultation and/or patient transfer and the optimal methodology accomplishing patient transfer.
  • Team building through high fidelity simulations with videotaped performance debriefings.
