Neuro@NoonByZoom, the interdisciplinary Neuroscience Journal Club at Saint Louis University will be on Nov. 5.  Dr. Michael Ariel will present the “Treadmilling Model for Plasticity of the Myelin Sheath” by R.D. Fields & D.J. Dutta which challenges the dogma that oligodendrocytes and their processes, the myelin sheaths, are just simple passive elements in the adult central nervous system.  The research suggests mature myelin can reversibly modulated the speed of axonal impulses by changing its thickness and nodal gap length. This modulation of myelin is regulated by exocytosis of thrombin protease inhibitors from astrocytes. Neuro@Noon is affiliated with the Henry and Amelia Nasrallah Center for Neuroscience.
