Neuro@Noon, the interdisciplinary Neuroscience Journal Club at Saint Louis University will be held on Thursday, Dec. 3. This in-person presentation starts at noon in Schwitalla Lecture Hall 3 AND will be simulcast on Zoom.
Dr. Egan will present a recent publication in Science entitled "Microglia monitor and protect neuronal function through specialized somatic purinergic junctions."
In this paper, the authors show an intimate relationship of microglia with damaged neuronal cell bodies that is mediated by high concentrations of ATP and ADP released by those injured and stressed neurons which is then detected by purinergic P2Y12 receptors expressed on microglia. This interaction may support the role of microglia in neurodegenerative diseases.
