Language and Identity: Regional Variation and Attitudes in Highland Ecuador

Friday, 09 April, 2021

The Department of Languages, Literatures, & Cultures invites all to their Annual Faculty Lecture. Presented by Christina García, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Spanish, this talk explores language variation and use in Highland Ecuador. As a multilingual and multidialectal nation, Ecuador provides fertile ground for examining the mutual influence of language and society. The results from a perception experiment presented here show how a particular linguistic feature contributes to regional identity within and beyond the highlands.
