Neuro@Noon, the interdisciplinary Neuroscience Journal Club at Saint Louis University will be held on Thursday, Dec. 2, 2021 in Schwitalla Lecture Hall 4 (M408). Dr. Tim M. Doyle will present a recent article in Nature Communications entitled “Neurotoxic reactive astrocytes induce cell death via saturated lipids.”
It had been shown that cytokines activate astrocytes to secrete factors that are toxic to neurons and that those factors may be secreted proteins. However, these none of these proteins induced neuronal death in serum-free in vitro cultures. In this paper, the authors show that astrocyte-induced toxicity is mediated by saturated lipids contained in APOE and APOJ lipoparticles. A better understanding of the signaling pathways mediated by lipids in the brain may reveal the therapeutic potential of inhibiting toxic lipid secretions as a means to prevent neural injury.
