Neuro@Noon, the interdisciplinary Neuroscience Journal Club at Saint Louis University will be held June 2, 2022, at Noon in Schwitalla Conference Room M360. Dr. Liberty Francois-Moutal presents an article published in Science entitled "HSP70 chaperones RNA-free TDP-43 into anisotropic intranuclear liquid spherical shells." The authors studied the mechanism of aggregation of an inter-nuclear binding protein TDP-43, which is a pathological hallmark age-related neurodegenerative diseases. Post-translational acetylation caused phase separation into anisosomes, droplets with symmetrical liquid spherical shells and liquid cores. Chaperone activity of the HSP70 family serves to maintain liquidity of anisosomal shells and cores. When ATP levels fell, the anisosomes converted into protein aggregates that are similar to the aggregation found in neurodegeneration.
