View Series Overview

For centuries scribes gathered in common spaces, scriptoria to compose, transcribe, recite, and (at times) pray the texts over which they labored. Most scriptorium work was done quietly by individuals, but designated times called for sharing findings and discussing ideas. This pro-social approach to building knowledge made the scriptorium a productive learning environment.

To foster a comparably pro-social and productive environment for scholarly writing, the Department of Theological Studies (DTS) and the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR)are sponsoring a “Scriptorium” at SLU.

Faculty from all disciplines and departments are invited to gather as a reflective and supportive writing community. Participants will have the opportunity to begin and end their work with a brief reflection/pray, establish and share goals, dedicate uninterrupted time to scholarly writing, and share progress during breaks. Participants may attend individual writing sessions or the entire time (10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Fridays).

Quiet, diligent writing sessions promise to promote respectful, curious project discussions during breaks, as well as achievement of writing goals, enhanced satisfaction with one’s writing, vibrant sharing of ideas, and improved writing habits.

Coffee, tea, and snacks will be provided. Participants who plan to join for lunch are asked to bring their own meal.
