'Masculinity, Shame and Self-Respect'

Thursday, 30 March, 2017

A survey of what it means to be a “real” man yielded “never showing your emotions, never being weak, playing through pain, winning at all costs, getting rich, and getting laid.”

This cultural view of masculinity, which has been called “a citadel complex," is organized by the double fears of being feminine and of being subordinated to another man, which both engender shame and humiliation.

Britt-Marie Schiller, Ph.D., of the St. Louis Psychoanalytic Institute, will focus on the sources of and defenses against shame and how to work one’s way out of the citadel complex and find self-respect.
