Atlas Kickoff Event: 'Exploring Latin America and the Caribbean with Atlas'

Enjoy an evening of music, dance, and delicious Latin American and Caribbean cuisine at the Atlas kick-off event from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 2, in the auditorium at the Center for Global Citizenship.

Highlights of the evening include:

  •  El Sazon, SLU's acrobatic salsa team, will perform acrobatic salsa dances and teach the audience how to salsa.
  • Samba Bom, a Brazilian musical ensemble and dance group, will play authentic Brazilian music and Brazilian dancers will perform and teach the audience how to samba. Traditional Latin and Caribbean cuisine from the local restaurants Mi Caribe (Dominican, Cuban and Puerto Rican cuisine), Papagayos (Honduran cuisine), and Brazilia (Brazilian cuisine).

The Latin American Studies program will also highlight their work with the Pulsera Project. The Pulsera Projects sell bracelets made in Central America. The funds raised benefit countless Central Americans, raising money for scholarships, secondary education programs, human rights issues, environmental projects, youth shelters and social enterprises, in addition to sustaining employment for nearly 200 artisans in Nicaragua and Guatemala.

SLU student Paul Sylvester, will play steel pan (drums) and the SLU theatre program will be participating with life-size puppets.
