Justice John MacMenamin of the Supreme Court of Ireland will discuss the unprecedented pressures on the very concept of the rule of law, both in the E.U. and internationally. The talk will consider the challenges set out by populism, nationalism, migration, and social alienation, all taking place in a digital age, where there is a real risk that the integrity of fact-finding, both in courts and the academy, runs the risk of misunderstanding and mis-portrayal. The talk will consider the key role to be played by the media in explaining the role of courts, judges and scholarship, where in Europe the attack on “experts” could pose an existential threat to reasoned debate.
This lecture will take place at noon Monday, April 10, in Scott Hall 1166.
