Tuesday, 09 May, 2017

Sigma Iota Rho, the International Studies honor society, will present "The Venezuelan Crisis: A Political Roundtable," with Latin American affairs expert J.D. Bowen from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., May 9, in Seminar Room 124a, the Center for Global Citizenship. The roundtable is the honor society's final event of this academic year and will feature a discussion about the causes of the current crisis in Venezuela and what is happening in the country currently.

Bowen received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2008 in the fields of comparative politics and international relations. His dissertation and current research focus on how political and economic elites in Latin America (particularly Ecuador) have responded to the emergence of powerful social movements organized by the indigenous peoples of the region. He has previously taught at Macalester College, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales in Quito, Ecuador.

Those interested in attending the discussion may wish to consult the following articles about the Venezuelan situation from the BBC and The Guardian for background on the current crisis.
