The Institutional Review Board (IRB) will host a special screening of HBO's The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and a brown bag discussion from 1 to 2:30 p.m., July 21, in Auditorium B, Learning Resources Center.
The film, based on the book by Rebecca Skloot, documents the life of Henrietta Lacks, an African American woman whose cancer cells change the course of treating the disease. Lacks, a cervical cancer patient in the 1950s, never knew that her cells made her an unwitting pioneer for medical breakthroughs and her family would rediscover the story of the "immortal" cells that saved millions of lives decades later.
Popcorn will be provided and a discussion will follow the screening.
