The SLU community will celebrate together with the Mass of the Holy Spirit at 11 a.m., Aug. 31, at St. Francis Xavier College Church. Christopher Collins, S.J., assistant to the president for mission and identity, will preside. Justin Daffron, S.J., special assistant to the president, will give the homily as the University marks the beginning of the 2017-2018 academic year.
Classes scheduled between 11 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. will be canceled.
The Mass of the Holy Spirit is a centuries-old tradition for many Catholic universities and the practice dates to the 16th Century and to the founding of the first Jesuit schools. The mass is a call to the SLU community to pray for guidance, the gifts of the Holy Spirit, particularly wisdom as students, faculty and staff resume their studies, research and other service to the world.
