Frank Coulson, Ph.D., professor of classics at The Ohio State University, will deliver the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies’s Fall National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Lecture at 3:15 p.m., Sept. 29, in Adorjan Hall.

Coulson’s lecture, “Why the Vulgate Commentary on Ovid?” discusses a commentary on The Metamorphoses of Ovid, written in Northern France around 1260 titled The Vulgate Commentary. This commentary draws on the rich store of earlier gloss on Ovid from the 12th century while adding detailed comments and insights of its own. The text circulated widely in France and Italy through 22 manuscript copies and it thought to have influenced authors including Dante.

Coulson’s talk will also discuss problems in editing medieval texts and issues in presenting such writings to modern readers.
