Vasileios Syros, Ph.D., from the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in American at Columbia University, will present as part of the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies’s Matteo Ricci Speaker Series at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13. The talk will be held in Room 142, Adorjan Hall.
Syros’s talk, “Heavens in Cathay China as a Mercantilist Utopia and Jesuit Political Thought,” aims to shed new light on Jesuit perceptions of cross-cultural encounters between early modern Europe and China, focusing on the work of Jesuit political writer Giovanni Botero. The lecture will argue that the ultimate goal of Botero's deployment of the example of China is to alert to the challenges associated with imperial expansion and to foreground the importance of trade for domestic stability.
A reception will follow the lecture.
