The Women and Gender Studies Department is hosting its “Coffee with Cool Women” series, beginning with SLU alumna Emma Cunningham. Cunningham is currently with the Center for Women in Transition, a St. Louis-based nonprofit that supports women exiting prison as they seek to reestablish their lives and to break the destructive cycle of repeat incarcerations. The coffee is set for 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 19, in Room 144, McGannon Hall.
The Center for Women in Transition was founded in 1997 when a group of women volunteering in a local jail began to notice that the same women were repeatedly returning to incarceration. The group determined that lack of safe housing, access to treatment for addiction, financial stability and strong support systems were leading to recidivism.
Cunningham will talk about the center and about working at a nonprofit.
Coffee and snacks will be provided.
