MLK Reading to Commemorate Anniversary of Civil Rights Leader's Visit to SLU

Friday, 12 October, 2018

On Thursday, Oct. 12, Saint Louis University will mark the 54 years since the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., spoke to a standing-room only crowd in the West Pine Gymnasium, now the Center for Global Citizenship.

The commemoration will take place at 1 p.m. in the Center for Global Citizenship.

While the University photographed King’s 1964 visit, his speech had been lost. However, an audio recording of the speech was recently unearthed by archival staff members at Washington University in St. Louis, which has been transcribed by SLU archivists.

During the Oct. 12 commemoration, SLU faculty, staff members and students will take turns reading part of the speech. The entire SLU community is invited to attend.
