We are looking at how the chemistry of drugs can affect society, specifically how socioeconomic and racial factors affect the perception of certain drugs and the people that use them. The molecular difference between cocaine and crack is a single hydrogen atom, but the ways in which society views them differently goes far beyond that. The War on Drugs plays a big role in the unjust incarceration rates seen in the United States. However, within the war on drugs, there is a lot of nuance that chemistry can help us distinguish, with the intent of pursuing justice.
The event will be in the Busch Student Center Room 251B.
