Book Talk: 'State of Health: Pleasure and Politics in Venezuelan Healthcare under Chavez'

Thursday, 25 April, 2019

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology will host a reading and discussion of Amy Cooper, Ph.D.’s new book, State of Health: Pleasure and Politics in Venezuelan Healthcare under Chávez (Unviersity of California Press: 2019), at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, in Room 251, Busch Student Center.

Talk details:

State of Health takes readers inside one of the most controversial regimes of the twenty-first century "Venezuela under Hugo Chávez " for a revealing description of how people’s lives changed for the better as the state began reorganizing society.

Cooper chronicles the pleasure people experienced accessing government health care and improving their quality of life. From personalized doctor’s visits to therapeutic dance classes, new health care programs provided more than medical services. The book demonstrates how the transformed health system succeeded in exciting people and recognizing historically marginalized Venezuelans as bodies who mattered.

Light refreshments will follow will follow the reading and discussion.
