Scott Zahm, Ph.D., will present Neuro@Noon on Thursday, May 2, in Room M360, Schwitalla Hall.
Zahm will discuss a scientific report, “Motor cortex stimulation reduces hyperalgesia in an animal model of central pain.” The experiments used a rodent model of central pain that was ameliorated by local stimulation of the motor portion of the cerebral cortex. Similar analgesia was evoked by stimulatne a small region of the brainstem called the Zona Incerta. The authors hypothesize that cerebral cortical effects in rats enhance the pain-reducing effects of the Zona Incerta.
