Guest Lecture Robert Hillenbrand - 'The Making of Islamic Art: East vs West in Syria 690-750.'

Robert Hillenbrand has been teaching at the Department of Fine Art, University of Edinburgh, since 1971 and was awarded a chair of Islamic art in 1989. Professor Hillenbrand retired in December 2007 but is currently an Honorary Professorial Fellow in the department of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies (IMES). In addition to many other works, he has written the prize-winning Islamic Architecture: Form, Function and Meaning(translated into Persian in 1998). He has also published some 120 articles on aspects of Islamic art and architecture. His scholarly interests focus on Islamic architecture, painting and iconography, with particular reference to Iran and to Umayyad Syria.
