Hospital Topping Off Signals Next Construction Phase

08/16/2018

The final beam that forms the skeleton of the new SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital was hoisted into place Thursday, as SLU and SSM Health commemorated a construction milestone on the academic medical campus.

The ceremony also celebrated the three-year-old partnership between the two Catholic institutions.

Saint Louis University President Fred P. Pestello, Ph.D., described the partnership as one that will improve the vitality of the city and region.

“SSM’s commitment to our partnership is more than a $550 million investment in this emerging medical center,” Pestello said.

“This investment is also a linchpin to the revitalization of Midtown St. Louis and bridging SLU’s south and north campuses. This means good-paying construction jobs and good-paying health care jobs – jobs that support the families and local businesses and our communities. We are proud to be part of the region’s economic progress.”

During the next phase of construction of the hospital, the exterior envelope and interior will developed.

The new SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital and ambulatory care center is scheduled to open September, 2020. It will feature more than 800,000 square feet of space, 316 private patient rooms, an expanded Level I trauma center and emergency department, larger intensive care units, expanded patient parking, green space and areas for future campus expansion.
