Bilyeu was a Med Scholar who received her undergraduate and medical degree at Saint Louis University. She returned to SLU in 2015 after completing a residency at Georgetown University School of Medicine.

“My husband is from St. Louis and I’m from Springfield, Illinois,” she said. “We both really loved St. Louis and I wanted to be in an academic setting.”

Bilyeu, who also serves as the associate program director of the residency program, said teaching is her passion.

“I love the camaraderie  and the ability to give something back to my learners. Just being in private practice wouldn’t be enough for me,” she said. “I find satisfaction in teaching the residents to be the best that they can be. It’s what keeps me waking up and wanting to go to work each day.”

Bilyeu became interested in obstetrics and gynecology while in medical school.

“Women’s health is a great field to be in if you want to lift up the women around you,” she said. “You have the opportunity to teach people about their bodies and there is long-term continuity so you get to know your patients beyond just delivering their babies.”

Bilyeu provides obstetric and gynecological care, with interest in HIV/AIDS, abnormal uterine bleeding and family planning. She also performs laparoscopic and vaginal surgery.

Bilyeu continues her passion for helping women in her volunteer work. She is on the board of Our Lady’s Inn, a homeless shelter for pregnant women, and on the board of Healing Action, which supports the victims of sexual exploitation.

“It is really important to me to help others – satisfaction doesn’t come from a paycheck for me,” she said. “I want to help my community.”

Bilyeu is married with two children, ages 2 and 4.

The Business Journal will celebrate the 40 Under 40 honorees at a reception on Nov. 18.
