Steve Smith: 1949-2023

04/28/2023

Long-time School of Law administrator Steve Smith died Thursday, March 16. He was 73.

Smith graduated from Saint Louis University School of Law in 1976 and served as an assistant and associate dean for more than 20 years.

“Steve always lit up a room with his smile and always made time for anyone and everyone who needed him,” said Michael Kolnik, dean of admissions for the School of Law. “Along with a few others, Steve shaped the familial and supportive community that SLU LAW continues to be today.”

During his tenure, Smith left a tenable mark on the School of Law, working to secure the renovation of Queens Daughters Hall to expand the school’s footprint. He is also credited in part for the creation of the Dagen Fellowship which provides money every year for summer stipends for students working in public interest.

“He was a good, kind, and wise man who never let a rule or a policy of the school stand in the way of what was best for the students he helped,” said Professor Tom Stewart, director of trial advocacy. Professor Stewart was a student during Dean Smith’s tenure.

Known for his volunteer work, Smith lived by the motto that we should all do “as much good as we can.” He was a member of the Rockwood School Board, a member and vice president of the Special School District board, president of Eureka Sports Association, and docent for the Sanai Temple in Sumter, South Carolina.

He leaves behind his wife of almost 50 years, Judy and their children Aaron and Lara.
