Library Associates Announce Student Writing Awards

The Saint Louis University Library Associates announced the winners of the Undergraduate Writing Award.

The award program began in 2014 and is in its third year.

Sophomore Parvuna Sulaiman, of the College of Arts and Sciences, won first prize First Prize for her personal essay, “Reds and Yellows.” Sulaiman received $500.

Senior Kristina DeYong, also from the College of Arts and Sciences, placed second with her piece,“Growing Up Female in the Bible Belt.” DeYong received $300.

Devonn Thomas, a freshman in the School of the Education received an Encouragement Award for her memoir, “For Nunu.”

The winning entries are published and available online in SLU’s undergraduate literary journal Kiln.

The Undergraduate Writing Award rotates annually between short fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction. Next year’s prize will be awarded for short fiction. Details of the 2018 cycle, including submission requirements and timeline, will be posted in the fall semester on the Undergraduate Writing Award Web site.

The mission of the Library Associates is to enhance the visibility of the Saint Louis University Libraries in order to promote the development of their collections and services. The organization also sponsors literary and cultural events, including the prestigious Saint Louis Literary Award, first presented in 1967 and given annually to a distinguished figure in literature.
