Heavy Traffic Expected Due to Firefighter Funeral

07/19/2017

Large crowds and high traffic near campus are expected today and Friday due to funeral services for St. Louis firefighter, Capt. John Kemper, who died from injuries sustained in the line of duty earlier this month. SLU staff, students and faculty should prepare to adjust their usual commutes and parking arrangements as needed.

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) anticipates that the Thursday visitation and Friday funeral service, both at Harris Stowe State University, will draw large crowds and create traffic flow problems around the areas between Compton Avenue and Olive Boulevard and Compton Avenue and Market Street.

The visitation will take place between 3 and 8 p.m. today. The funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, July 21, with crowds arriving as early as 8 a.m. The funeral will conclude around 2 p.m.

Parking for visitors to the services will include the Fred Weber lot and the Olive Compton garage.

There will be fire department displays at the intersections of Compton Avenue and Market Street and at the intersection of Olive Boulevard and Compton Avenue. Traffic on Compton will be reduced.

DPS and the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department will be present to assist with traffic during both the visitation and funeral service.
