Students Needed to Help With Rural Health Insurance Research Project

07/26/2017

Students are needed to assist in a community-based research project with long-term policy implications. SLU is partnering with Missouri Rural Crisis Center (MRCC), a state-wide organization of family farmers, on this survey. The results will be used to educate policymakers, farmers and rural communities about how the costs of health insurance and health care are impacting farm families.

Participating students will conduct telephone surveys of Missouri farmers and ranchers about their health insurance coverage. The 10-minute phone interviews will generally take place in the evenings between 5 and 9 p.m. and on weekends between noon and 9 p.m. Early morning shifts from 7:30 to 9 a.m. and noon to 2 p.m. shifts may also be available. All calls will be made from the SLUCOR suite on the fourth floor of the Salus Center.

As many calls as possible need to be conducted in July, August and September during slow farming season before harvesting begins.

Students can choose the days they participate. However, a commitment of at least 16 hours a week is preferred until classes start and eight hours a week after classes begin. Those who can commit fewer hours will be considered.

The position pays $12 an hour. Students interested in medicine, public health, law or the social sciences are especially encouraged to take part.

To apply, email Paula Buchanan, Ph.D.

The IRB protocol number for this study is 28433 and the protocol was approved on July 13, 2017.
