Campus Ministry Mass Collections Raise Thousands for Good Causes

11/16/2017

As part of their celebrations of faith, SLU students and other members of the University community have raised over $3,400 this academic year to benefit a number of SLU-affiliated good causes and organizations through collections at the student-oriented 9 p.m. Sunday Masses at St. Francis Xavier College Church.

As of Wednesday, Nov. 15, the weekly collections had netted $3,432.62 to support the Student Emergency Relief Fund, Pregnant and Parenting Assistance Fund, Campus Kitchen, Xavier Winter Inn, SLU Relay for Life and Casa de Salud.

During the 2016-2017 academic year, the Sunday collections raised $8,405.16, with the Student Emergency Relief Fund, the traditional first recipient of the year’s generosity, receiving $1,541.67 of that total.

Other groups that benefited from the 2016-2017 donation campaign included the Pregnant and Parenting Assistance Fund, St. Benedict Joseph Labre Ministry with the Homeless, North Grand Neighborhood Services, SLU’s Camp Kesem, and FUNDAMER, an El Salvador-based non-profit. Two special collections at last year’s Ash Wednesday parish Mass and student Mass collected funds for the Chesed Shel Emeth Society Jewish cemetery in University City. The cemetery was vandalized earlier that year.

The Masses are coordinated by the Department of Campus Ministry and collections will continue through the end of the 2017-2018 school year.
