Provost's Message: Crowell Appointed as First Director of the University Core

05/03/2018

Colleagues,

I am very excited to announce that, with the strong support of the University Undergraduate Core Committee (UUCC), I have appointed Dr. Ellen Crowell, associate professor of English, as SLU’s first Director of the Core, effective June 1, 2018.

As Director of the Core, Dr. Crowell will chair the UUCC (in a non-voting role) and facilitate University-wide discussion and advancement of Core-related initiatives, including proposals for the new Core and related faculty development.  She will also serve on the Council of Academic Deans and Directors (CADD).

Dr. Crowell was one of several finalists for the position, which drew a strong pool of candidates.  A SLU faculty member since 2004, Dr. Crowell has won multiple institutional awards for her teaching and has also been recognized for her extensive service in support of undergraduate education. She has directed both the undergraduate English program and the English department’s research-intensive honors program, and has served on the College of Arts and Sciences Academic Honesty, Undergraduate Curriculum, and Core Assessment Committees. University-wide, she has served on the University Honors Program Faculty Advisory Board and been particularly active in recent Academic Affairs initiatives related to supporting and advancing integrative learning and undergraduate research.

Serving as the interim chair of the UUCC since its founding has been Dr. Gary Barker, professor of theatre and associate dean for undergraduate affairs in the College of Arts and Sciences. On behalf of the UUCC, I wish to share my greatest appreciation for his exemplary leadership.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Ellen Crowell on her appointment.

Nancy Brickhouse, Ph.D.
