Volunteers Needed for Orthotics Fabrication Lab

11/09/2018

Students in the final year of their physical therapy coursework are in need of faculty and staff volunteers to assist with their orthotics fabrication skills.

Volunteers should be considered to be mild over or under-pronators in order to participate in an individualized foot and ankle evaluation and subsequent fabrication of a pair of foot orthotics.

The students, as part of their course work, are required to examine the foot and ankle region, to determine an appropriate foot orthotic, and to fabricate the pair of orthotics in order to apply their clinical reasoning and psychomotor skills.

Volunteers cannot have diabetes, or any circulation or vascular issues in their legs or feet. Participants need to be available for two sessions. The first will be from 12:45 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20, for the food and ankle examination. The second will be for the foot orthotic fabrication, which will take place on either Tuesday, Nov. 27, Thursday, Nov. 29, or Tuesday, Dec. 4. Each of these follow-up sessions will occur at an appointed time between 2:30 and 5 p.m.

All sessions will take place at the School of Allied Health Professions.

There is no charge for the foot orthotics, but each volunteer needs to be willing to wear shorts during the sessions and bring in a pair of walking or running shoes in which the orthotics can be used.

Those interested in assisting the students in the Program in Physical Therapy develop their assessment and orthotic fabrication skills while receiving a free pair of individualized foot orthotics should contact Pam Abbott, in the Department of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training.
