Participants Needed for Campus Survey of First-Generation Faculty, Staff, Students

04/11/2019

Academic Affairs and Student Development are conducting a brief survey of Saint Louis University community members to start a broad conversation about what it means to be a first-generation (“first-gen”) college student, to identify who on campus is first-gen and how the University might better support first-gen students studying at SLU.

Definitions of “first-gen” vary; for the purposes of the survey, the term includes students who may be the first members of their immediate families to attend college, students who may have parents who had some college but did not complete a degree, or students who may self-identify as not having prior knowledge of or exposure to higher education institutions.

Many faculty, staff, administrators and students at SLU were or are first-gen, which means there is a wealth of knowledge within the SLU community that could be shared to support current and incoming first-gen students. The survey attempts to capture a small bit of that knowledge. The results of the survey will inform future programming.

Questions about the survey may be directed to Mona Hicks, Dean of Students; Rob Wood, Associate Provost for Academic Affairs;  or Debra Lohe, Director of the Reinert Center.
