'1st Gen' Faculty and Staff Volunteers Sought for Move-In

As part of the University’s efforts to raise visibility about the support systems available for first-generation (“1st Gen”) students, SLU faculty and staff who identify as first-generation college students are being sought as Move-In volunteers.

Faculty and staff members who identify as first-generation or "1st Gen" students are asked to help SLU's new and returning 1st Gen undergraduate and graduate students know that their experiences are something to celebrate as fall semester gets underway. Submitted photo

First-generation faculty and staff can to sign up to be a Move-In volunteer on Thursday, Aug. 22, and Friday, Aug. 23. A T-shirt will be provided to all Move-In volunteers, and lunch will also be provided on Thursday, Aug. 22 to those volunteering.

1st Gen buttons will be delivered to all volunteer spaces on Thursday morning and will be distributed to volunteers and will be available for pick up in the Dean of Students Office at Room 356, Busch Student Center.

The goal is for new and returning 1st Gen students to see that many faculty and staff through the University have also been 1st Gen, and to know their experiences are something to celebrate.

Defined inclusively, 1st Gen students are those who are the first in their immediate families to attend college; those whose parents had some college but did not complete a degree; or those who self-identify as not having prior knowledge of or exposure to higher education before attending college.
