Local Sports Greats to Speak at SLU

Local sports greats Kevin and Kristin Folkl will speak at the opening of the Richard A. Chaifetz School of Business’s intercollegiate athletics management course on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2019.
The talk will be held in Room 234, Cook Hall, and will begin at 6 p.m. The talk’s location may be subject to change.
The two siblings have left an indelible mark on St. Louis, and in international play. Kristin Folkl won eight state titles at St. Joseph’s Academy in basketball and volleyball; was a two-sport All-American at Stanford University; won three national titles with Stanford volleyball; played in two Final Fours in basketball; and was an Olympian with the USA Women’s National Team in volleyball at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996. She went on to play for five years in the WNBA and in international basketball leagues. She was inducted in the National Federation of High Schools, Stanford, Missouri, and St. Louis Sports Halls of Fame, and captured numerous awards. She is now director of volleyball operations and executive coordinator of Nomos LLC.
At 6’8”, Kevin Folkl was a basketball and high-jump star out of Saint Louis University High School, leading Washington University to national prominence between 1992 and 1996.
He was a three-time All-America selection (1994, 1995, 1996) and earned University Athletic Association (UAA) Conference Player of the Year honors in 1995. He is the 11th all-time leading scorer while at Washington University and holds the school record for highest field goal percentage in a season (65.6 percent, 1993-94). Folkl also ranks first in the school’s history in field goal percentage (63.1), fourth in blocked shots (140) and 10th in field goals made (543). An Academic All-America selection in 1995, he averaged 16.1 points per game as a junior and 16.0 as a senior. The Bears posted a 79-27 (.745) overall record in his four seasons. The Bears posted back-to-back 23-win seasons in 1994-95 and 1995-96, and made an NCAA Quarterfinal appearance in 1996, when Kevin Folkl was in contention of NCAA DIII National Player of the Year.
In 2018 Folkl was named to the UAA’s 30th Anniversary Team and was inducted into Washington University’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. After several successful stints with EY, Stifel, Citi, he is currently with NISA Investment Advisors in St. Louis.
The pair will tell their stories about their experiences as nationally and internationally competitive student-athletes, and will speak about what intercollegiate athletics taught them including the lessons they carried to life after college and professional sports.
