Chess Team Takes Blitz Tourney Title

SLU's chess team took home the crown from the 2019 U.S. Collegiate Blitz Tournament, and grand master Dariusz Swiercz placed first individually in the blitz rounds of the dual Rapid and Blitz Championship Tournament held at the University’s Il Monastero.

The combined Rapid and Blitz Collegiate Tournament was the first of its kind in the country. The tournament was held Saturday, March 16, and Sunday, March 17.

The tournament was the latest addition to the packed competitive chess schedule that currently includes the Pan American Intercollegiate Chess Championship and Final Four of College Chess.

Billiken chess players faced off against some of the top teams and players in the country. In addition to Swiercz’s first place finish in the Blitz Championship, SLU grand master Benjamin Bok took home second place in the blitz rounds.
