SLU Welcomes MLK Scholar Applicants

03/21/2019

Some of the nation's most gifted high school students will be on campus this week for the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Interview Weekend.

The students’ visits to SLU began on Thursday, March 21, and were set to continue through Saturday, March 23. While on campus, the students will interview for a Presidential Scholarship, which provides full tuition for four years.

Faculty and staff are urged to help welcome these visitors and their families to campus.

Candidates for the award could take part in an optional overnight stay in the residence halls on Thursday, March 21.

On Friday, March 22, visitors are set to attend a class, have lunch with current Martin Luther King Jr. Scholars and meet with academic departments. The candidates were also given the option to take a trolley tour of the city, including the Central West End and Busch Stadium or an expansive tour of the SLU campus, which was to include the Academic Tech Commons, residence halls and St. Francis Xavier College Church.

The weekend includes a kick-off with a Welcome Reception on Friday, March 22, giving interviewers an informal opportunity to meet the candidates.

On Saturday, March 23, leaders from the St. Louis community as well as University alumni are scheduled to join current Martin Luther King Jr. Scholars and SLU faculty and staff members in interviewing this year’s finalists.

In order to qualify for a Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship, students must have an ACT composite score of 23 or greater or an SAT of 1050 and a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher. In addition to these academic credentials, potential Martin Luther King Jr. Scholars must demonstrate a commitment to the promotion of diversity, social justice and change in our society and demonstrate leadership in the classroom, on campus and in their communities.
