Utility Infrastructure Project to Impact North Campus Walkways, Sidewalks

This summer, several walkways and sidewalks on north campus will be closed to foot traffic for work related to the utility infrastructure project announced last fall.

Crews will install new underground electrical and gas conduits, and other equipment in advance of replacing the 55-year-old electrical substation that supplies power to about one-third of the north campus. That work will get underway later this year.

Tied to SLU’s strategic and campus master plans, the utility infrastructure project is designed to reduce costs, save energy and position the University for future growth.

Impacted Walkways

The walkways that are closing are located east of Grand Boulevard, primarily around Busch Student Center and the area that houses Shannon, Macelwane and Monsanto Halls. These walkways include:

After the electrical and gas work is completed, the walkways will be replaced. Several will be widened to better accommodate emergency vehicles. The walkways will reopen in stages, and work is expected to be completed by mid-September.

Because the new substation will power most buildings on the north campus, additional electrical and gas lines will be laid, including west of Grand. Specific locations are being finalized. Any disruption to the campus will be shared with the SLU community.

Crosswalk Repairs

In an unrelated project, the general contractor for last summer’s Grand streetscape project is doing some additional work on three crosswalks, which will limit the ability to cross the street at those locations. They are:

As with the walkways for the utilities project, the crosswalks will reopen in stages, with work expected to be completed in early August.

Project Updates

Starting June 24 Spire will begin work to install new gas supply lines under Lindell Boulevard near Fitzgerald Hall in connection with SLU’s utility upgrade. Crews will attempt to bore under the street, but if they must trench across because of an obstruction, there will be limited lane and sidewalk closures. Work is expected to last one-two weeks.

Outreach to Campus

The Division of Facilities Services is overseeing the projects and has reached out to numerous areas that may be potentially impacted by the walkway, sidewalk and crosswalk closures, including:
