Opportunities Available for Undergraduates to Apply for Goldwater, Truman Scholarships

10/24/2019

The Office of Competitive Fellowships and Scholarships is encouraging ambitious undergraduate students to consider submitting applications to two prestigious opportunities, the Goldwater Scholarship and the Truman Scholarship.

Each award requires institutional endorsement, and the internal deadline to apply for both is Sunday, Dec. 15.

Interested students should contact Robert Pampel, Ph.D., director of the University Honors Program, who serves as the campus representative for both awards. Students can also make appointments with Pampel by using the EAB Navigate mobile app.

About the Programs

Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program
  • Established by Congress in 1986, the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation operates an educational scholarship program designed to provide opportunities for outstanding U.S. students with excellent academic records and demonstrated interest in, and potential for, research careers in the natural sciences, mathematics and engineering.
  • The scholarship award covers eligible expenses up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.
  • Scholarship recipients nominated as sophomores can expect to receive a maximum of two years of support.
  • Scholarship recipients nominated as juniors are eligible for a maximum of one year of support.
  • To be eligible, a student must be a current full-time sophomore or junior, who is or intends to pursue a baccalaureate degree, has one or two years of full-time undergraduate study remaining, has a B average or equivalent, and is a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or U.S. national, who will pursue a research career in the natural sciences, mathematics or engineering.
  • In the spring 2020, the Goldwater Foundation will award scholarships to students who will be college juniors or seniors during the 2020-2021 academic year. In order to be considered for an award, students must be nominated by their institution.
  • The submission deadline for all 2020 nominations is by 5 p.m., Central Standard Time (CST), on the last Friday in January 2020.
  • Applications and supporting documents must be submitted electronically from the foundation’s website.
The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation
  • The federal memorial to the nation’s 33rd president awards merit-based scholarships to college students who plan to pursue careers in government or elsewhere in public service.
  • Truman Scholars receive up to $30,000 for graduate or professional school, participate in leadership development activities and have special opportunities for internships and employment with the federal government.
  • Each nominee for the Truman Scholarship must be a full-time junior-level student at a four-year institution pursuing a bachelor's degree during the 2019-2020 academic year.
  • “Junior” in the context of this scholarship program means a student who plans to continue full-time undergraduate study and who expects to receive a baccalaureate degree between December 2020 and August 2021, or a student in his or her third year of collegiate study who expects to graduate during the 2019-2020 academic year.
  • A strong candidate for the Truman Scholarship meets the above eligibility requirements and also has an extensive record of public and community service; has outstanding leadership potential and communication skills; and is committed to a career in government or elsewhere in public service.
