SLU Students Gather to Watch the Iowa Caucuses

by Jeff Ackels

Election season has kicked off and Saint Louis University is providing ways for students to get involved and events aimed at ensuring Billikens don’t miss a minute of the action.

The Department of Political Science hosted an Election Watch Party for the Iowa Caucuses on Monday, Feb. 3, in the Center for Global Citizenship where  students watched, discussed and learned all about the process of caucuses.

Steven Rogers, Ph.D., provided insight on how caucuses work and statistics from previous caucuses that were designed to help predict the outcome of this year’s Iowa Caucus.

The event gave students a chance to speak with faculty members and the SLU groups about politics.

SLU political groups including the College Democrats, College Republicans, Young Americans for Liberty, Model UN, Rainbow Alliance, Green Billikens and UNA were on hand as well.

"We care about politics in general," senior Claire Macko, president of the SLU College Republicans, said. "Whoever wins the Democratic Caucus matters to us. We are here for inclusion in the SLU political community."

As the caucuses got underway, students spoke of the need for young people to participate in the political process.

"We felt we needed to be here because it’s such an important moment in politics," junior Savanah Seyer, a member of the SLU College Democrats, said.  "If we want to have a future that’s bright, young people have to get involved in politics and stand up for what they believe in."

Students will have the opportunity to attend future events hosted by the Department of Political Science.

The department will host events on Tuesday, Feb. 11, and on Tuesday, March 3, for the New Hampshire Primary and Super Tuesday.
