Doisy College Introduces High School Health Care Exploration Camp

01/24/2020

Doisy College of Health Sciences (DCHS) is introducing its DCHS Summer Health Care Exploration Camp, a new camp that will welcome high school students interested in exploring careers in health care in summer 2020.

The campus includes a special focus on introducing students from underrepresented communities to explore professional paths in the allied health professions specifically and health care sector more broadly. Every student selected for the camp will receive scholarship to cover the full cost of the camp.

Participants will stay in one of the university’s new residence halls for the entire week, have all meals provided, will receive SLU gear and have organized evening activities planned with current SLU students.

Jesús García-Martínez, M.D., Ph.D., associate dean for research in the college, said he is hopeful this camp will have a meaningful impact on its participants and a positive impact on increasing diversity in the health sciences.

“We hope the students will gain a good understanding of the health professions we have in the Doisy College of Health Sciences,” García-Martínez said. “Through case presentations, we aim to show the students how the different health professionals interact with each other to treat patients and help them recover their health.”
