Students Seeking Donations to Help Those Impacted by Hurricane Eta

11/12/2020

A team of SLU students are collecting donations to help those impacted by the devastation of Hurricane Eta.

Striking in early November, Hurricane Eta hit Central America as a category 4 hurricane, bringing with it severe winds, flooding, and destruction. Hurricane Eta is one of the biggest threats to face Honduras since Hurricane Mitch in 1998. More than 1.8 million people have been affected by Eta and over 2,700 homes have been destroyed.

Students Andrea Somoza and Lissane Kafie, two international students from Honduras, are seeking the campus community’s help to collect donations that will be shipped directly to the most affected areas in Honduras.

“We are collecting canned food, clothes, basic hygiene products, anti-bacterial gel, blankets and more,” said Andrea Somoza, a student in the College for Public Health and Social Justice.

Donation bins have been placed at the Pius XII Memorial Library, the Simon Recreation Center (Laclede entrance), and at the Department of Campus Ministry. Somoza and Kafie will be collecting donations until Monday, Nov. 23.

“Our mantra is ‘The difference between Hurricane Mitch and Hurricane Eta is us,’” Kafie said.
