McNair Scholars Program Seeks Graduate Mentors

11/18/2020

The Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program at Saint Louis University (McNair Scholars Program; SLU McNair) currently has service opportunities available for graduate students who are interested in serving as mentors to participants of the Gateway to McNair Scholars Program.

This pre-McNair program focuses on students that are first-generation, Pell-eligible or traditionally underrepresented in Ph.D. programs, and serves multiple schools in the Saint Louis area including, SLU, Fontbonne University, Harris-Stowe State University, the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL), Washington University in St. Louis and Webster University.

Being a Gateway mentor is both a service and professional development opportunity. Graduate mentors who will serve in this role are expected to do so throughout their mentee’s time in the program, which can last for up to one academic year. There is a need for graduate students across all disciplines.

Graduate students from all of the universities above are welcome.

Since its inception, the Gateway to McNair Scholars program has provided a direct pipeline to SLU McNair, affording a flexible space for students to explore and ponder various disciplines before their junior and senior year when they must solidify plans for graduate school. Mentoring by graduate students is a key component of the Gateway program.

To the extent possible, scholars are matched with graduate mentors who share their academic disciplines and research interests. They are then able to gain insight into graduate school and the field they are passionate about through ongoing communication with their mentor.

Those who actively participate in Gateway and demonstrate promise for graduate study also receive priority consideration for the McNair Scholars Program.
