14th Annual Pediatric Science Days and Symposium Slated for April 21-22

04/09/2021

The Department of Pediatrics announces that its 14th Annual Pediatric Science Days will be held virtually on April 21-22.

About Pediatric Science Days

Pediatric Science Days is an annual event that celebrates pediatric research at Saint Louis University. In addition to hosting a visiting professor whose career has focused on pediatric research, a Research Symposium will highlight research involving any aspect of child-related health from across all campuses at SLU. Organizers encourage the participation of trainees at all levels (undergraduate and post-graduate students, residents and postdoctoral fellows).

Sherin Devaskar, M.D., the Mattel Executive Endowed Professor and Chair of Pediatrics at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA), will be the (virtual) visiting professor. She is a former SLU faculty member and director of the Pediatric Research Institute, and served as a clinical neonatologist at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital from 1981-1995.

Wednesday, April 21

Pediatric Science Days kicks off with a Grand Rounds presentation by Devaskar at 8 a.m., via Zoom Virtual Meeting.

Thursday, April 22

The Research Symposium will be held via Zoom Virtual Meeting. Registration is required for the Symposium. This year, there will be three, abbreviated pre-recorded presentation sessions:

About Visiting Professor Sherin Devaskar

Sherin Devaskar, M.D., is the Mattel Executive Endowed Professor and Chair of Pediatrics at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) and attending neonatologist at the Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA. She also serves as Assistant Vice Chancellor of Children’s Health, and Executive Director, UCLA Children’s Discovery and Innovation Institute (CDI), and she is the Director of the Neonatal Research Center at UCLA.

Devaskar is the principal investigator of the UCLA Child Health Research Career Development Program and the Human and Molecular Development Training grant. Devaskar’s NIH-funded research program studies the role of pregnancy exposures on the long-term outcome of babies. Her program focuses on premature and growth-restricted babies, the nutrition they receive while in the womb and soon after birth, and the propensity of these babies to develop adult-onset conditions, including obesity, diabetes, hypertension and Alzheimer’s disease. She has authored over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals. As the epitome of the academic “quadruple threat,” Devaskar is a terrific role model for trainees and junior faculty.
