Summer-Winter Office Renamed Summer and Extended Studies

01/21/2021

The Summer-Winter Office has been officially renamed Summer and Extended Studies. The name change comes as a result of an increase in scope of responsibilities for the Office that extends beyond summer-winter programming.

The Office currently manages undergraduate summer for-credit courses, the annual winter session, visiting students, summer international immersion programs and over 80 Summer At SLU K-12 camps and academies.

In addition to the above responsibilities, under Summer and Extended Studies, the purview of the Office will include Visiting Young Scholars (high school students who take SLU college courses) and all undergraduate and graduate non-degree seeking students, which include those who are categorized as visiting and graduate unclassified.

“This name change comes as a result of reflecting on what our Office currently does and what our new responsibilities will entail, which go far beyond summer and winter,” says Troy Hargrove, director of Summer and Extended Studies. “Our new name also positions us to better serve the University and support new opportunities.”

Though the higher education landscape has experienced significant challenges over the last year due to the pandemic, special sessions at SLU continue to grow. Summer 2020 saw a 4.5% increase in enrollment and a 7.5% increase in credit hours from summer 2019, and winter 2020-2021 enrollment has increased by nearly 70% from last year.

Summer and Extended Studies will continue to collaborate with the academic units across campus to capitalize on this growth, including a focus on year-round programming, such as Visiting Young Scholars and non-degree seeking students.

With a new name, the Office’s mission remains the same.

“We will continue to provide exceptional programming in all the areas for which we are responsible,” says Hargrove. “Our commitment is to serve students, faculty, staff, and the community motivated by the high calling and noble mission of Saint Louis University.”
