Watch the SLU String Ensembles Perform the Music of Florence Price
03/03/2021
In a virtual performance for Black History Month, the SLU string ensembles performed the music of Florence Price.
On Friday, Feb. 26, in honor of Black History Month, the Saint Louis University String Ensembles performed the work of Florence Price. Now, the performance is available for viewing through the Saint Louis University YouTube Channel (ARTS at SLU).
The project is a virtual string orchestra performance of the work Adoration by Florence Price (1887-1953).
Price is perhaps best known for being the first female African-American composer to be performed by a major symphony orchestra (Chicago Symphony Orchestra, 1932). The works of female composers and composers of color were routinely denied entry into the canon of American music, and it has only been recently that the world is gaining a full understanding of the musical contributions and gifts of Price and many others.
