1818 Community Engagement Grant Projects Make Impact

05/17/2021

Despite COVID-19 barriers inhibiting many facets of community engagement this past year, the 18 selected projects from the 1818 Community Engagement Grant program each had an impact on the St. Louis area. From providing hygiene and PPE kits to unhoused individuals, to allowing girl scouts from low-income families to still participate in virtual programming with the assistance of better technology and WiFi, to creating a year of virtual programming for the residents of the Mary Ryder nursing home, SLU students and faculty developed creative solutions to address social issues in St. Louis, many of which were brought on by the pandemic.

Instead of hosting the usual Grant Showcase where each group could highlight the impact of its project via poster presentations, students and faculty instead created virtual posters with voice-recorded presentations. These are available via SLU YouTube Channel.

The 1818 Community Engagement Grant Program, sponsored by the Center for Service and Community Engagement, was launched as part of the University’s bicentennial celebration. It empowers students to self-author their own experiences related to service and social action by providing grants of up to $1,800. To learn more visit the program's website.
