ParkMobile Data Breach: What Billikens Need to Know

ParkMobile, a mobile parking payment application used for street parking in St. Louis City and around campus, experienced a data breach in March that exposed some personal information of their 21 million users. Since many Billikens use this application to pay for street metered parking, our Information Security team, SLUAware, would like to inform you of the situation.

Out of an abundance of caution, Billikens that use this app may want to change their ParkMobile password. To follow best practices, you should use a unique password, not used for your SLU account or other online applications.

This data breach exposed the following personal information of the 21 million affected users:

As with any data breach exposing personal information, attackers may use this in future phishing campaigns. In this unique situation, with license plate numbers included in the stolen data, the SLUAware team wants to highlight this as a tactic that attackers could use to appear legitimate. The team also encourages Billikens to always assess emails for legitimacy before taking action, especially if the message is unexpected.
