Alpha Sigma Nu is the only honor society permitted to bear the name Jesuit. It recognizes students who distinguish themselves in scholarship, loyalty, and service. It encourages its members to a lifetime pursuit of intellectual development, deepening Ignatian spirituality, service to others, and a commitment to the core principles of Jesuit education.

Founded in 1915, Alpha Sigma Nu has been the highest-ranking honor society at Jesuit colleges and universities across the United States, Canada, and South Korea. With members in every state in the U.S. and 112 foreign countries, ASN now includes 32 universities and is over 80,000 members strong.

The name Alpha Sigma Nu signifies the Greek words Adelphotes Scholastikon Nikephor-own, meaning the company of honor students. The colors of the society are maroon and gold, the same colors that adorn the family seal of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus.

Alpha Sigma Nu began as a fraternal honor society at Marquette University in 1915.

This year’s ceremony marks the 49th anniversary of Alpha Sigma Nu as a coeducational honor society and the 99th anniversary of the Saint Louis University Chapter. The SLU chapter started in 1923, and a sister organization, Gamma Pi Epsilon for female students, was formed in 1925.

These complementary groups merged in 1973 to form Alpha Sigma Nu as it is known today. The current president is Kathleen Botterbush. Officers are Ananta Sriram, Andrea Porter, and Elizabeth Cummings.

At the ceremony, each inductee received a certificate of membership and the key of Alpha Sigma Nu. The key of the society bears the three Greek letters Alpha, Sigma, and Nu, along with the eye of wisdom. On the reverse of the key are the member’s name and date of induction. This key, to be worn at graduation and Alpha Sigma Nu functions, serve as a reminder of the Alpha Sigma Nu ideals and a call to further action on behalf of the Jesuit mission.

The qualifications and procedures for inducting students into Alpha Sigma Nu are outlined in the Alpha Sigma Nu Bylaws General Qualifications. In general, students nominated for membership in the Society must have a scholastic rank in the top 15% of their class. No more than 4% of the total student enrollment can be admitted.
