A total solar eclipse made it's way across the United States on Monday, April 8, and students at Saint Louis University stepped outside to view the rare event.

A solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, casting a shadow that blocks out the light from the sun. St. Louis wasn't quite in the full path of totality, but the sun was still 99% obscured.

At around 2 p.m. the campus fall into darkness at the peak of the eclipse. The moment brought a loud applause from the hundreds who ventured outside to view the eclipse.

Students, faculty, staff and community members lined West Pine Mall to view the eclipse. The largest group congregated around the clock tower where SLU's Student Activities Board passed out eclipse glasses.
