Saint Louis University marked the beginning of the new academic year with its traditional Mass of the Holy Spirit. This year's liturgy took place on Thursday, Aug. 22, at Saint Francis Xavier College Church.

David Suwalsky, S.J., Ph.D., vice president for mission and identity, presided and Fr. James F. Duffy, S.J., MD.,. associate dean for clinical curriculum at the SLU School of Medicine delivered the homily.

The Mass of the Holy Spirit is a tradition at Jesuit schools and university throughout the world. These celebrations date back to 1548, when the initial Mass was celebrated at the first Jesuit school in Messina, Sicily.
