The Saint Louis University (SLU) student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has received a Certificate of Commendation. This places them among the top 5 percent of ASCE's 400 student chapters, recognizing their work during the fall and spring 2024 semesters.

“The chapter’s accomplishments reflect the enthusiasm and hard work of the student officers and members, as well as the guidance of the faculty adviser," said Leslie Payne, director of ASCE’s student and younger member programs.

In 2024, the SLU ASCE chapter met all six of its goals, including a 125% increase in first-year student participation and multiple first-place finishes at Mid-America Student Symposium competitions.

The chapter organized professional development opportunities, including a speaker series featuring industry professionals like ASCE Region 7 Governor Shawnna Erter and Burj Khalifa lead structural engineer Larry Novak. Members also took educational field trips, such as to the Melvin Price Locks and Dam.

Additionally, the group hosted multiple events open to the entire campus community. These events focused on student well-being or served as an opportunity for students to network with professionals. They demonstrated community service by volunteering with Great Rivers Greenway, supporting Safe Connections, and participating in SciFest at the St. Louis Science Center during Engineers Week.

This commendation underscores the SLU chapter’s commitment and activity in the field of civil engineering, reflecting the high standards and supportive environment cultivated by the SLU School of Science and Engineering.
